Post 4: Book 1 Project

My idea to help the fans further their experience with the book Fallen is to create a line of merchandise that involves Team Daniel and Team Cam. These two characters are key to the plot and without out them it would be a pretty stagnant story! I would sell t-shirts, phone, cases, etc. at bookstores and stores like Target.  With the help of this merchandise fans can walk down the street and have people know their strong opinion of whom Luce should be with!

That moment when Luce see’s Daniel a second time it was thought that his reaction would be different, similar to the first time she meets Cam, who gives Luce so much affection it scares her a bit.  But his reaction certainly created a sense of intrigue for the readers. “…She felt her lips pull up in a smile back up at him, but then he raised his hand in the air. And flipped her off.” (Kate 9%) This instantly made an impression, and I am sure fans were debating whether or not Daniel was the love interest or if the dashing Cam was to be Luce’s dark knight.  At the time most probably believed that Cam was going to be “the guy”. “Cam’s emerald eyes sparkled at Luce, who stiffened… Luce blushed she didn’t usually get involved with rocker guys-but then again, none of them had ever pulled a desk next to her…” (Kate 10%) The difference in the way that Daniel and Cam treat Luce within the first few chapters should have created a strong team Cam reaction.  Though as readers got to the end of the book, if they were like me, would have quickly switched to team Daniel. “And this time when your love blows into that tragic little puff to ash, it’s going to be for good.” (Kate 88%) Fans of Daniel will be able to show their pride with a shirt or a phone case and similar merchandise as the fight between these two over the fate of Luce continues! Now if there are still a sparse bit of team Cam fans out there don’t worry, Team Cam merchandise will be available as well. I know when the movie comes out for this book merchandise such as this will be extremely popular. “And while Luce dreamed below of the most glorious wings unfurling-the likes of which she’d never seen before-two angels in the rafters shook hands.” (Kate 99%) With an ending like that who doesn’t want to read more and support their team? Will this momentary truce about Luce last?

I think this idea will work for a number of ways. Ideas like it have worked extremely well in the past. For instance the twilight shirts and merchandise that is team Jacob and Edward.  These sold very well. It could help broaden the audience for this book because if it is sold in clothing stores the teams and book would be recognized but different and larger audience. When fans wear the shirts and people ask them what their shirt is for and they tell them then even more people will know! It will create a big domino affect, which is exactly what I want!  This will also net attention for the book. I would also create commercials to help net more attention for the products and the book. This merchandise will allow people who are already fans to get in on the “love game” that is created within the series in a more tangible way. Plus what fan doesn’t love to show their PRIDE! With this merchandise fans will show their pride for the book and the author, Lauren Kate. All in all I don’t see how this idea could fail, given the multiple ways I have seen it succeed.

  1. I like the thoroughness of your idea, down to the details about how you'll market it. Good job of showing how the conflict for Luce plays itself out in the novel setting up the two sides that readers begin to fall in.

  2. I think that creating merchandise is a greta way to advertise this book, especially since there are sides to be taken. I think that the fans will want to show which side they support and want to purchase the clothing and phone cases more.
